Bathroom Logo Design
My idea sketches for a bathroom designs that move away from stereotypes and some that include all genders.
In the first image there is a blue moon, a black background and a white female-gender-sign. The blue is faded from dark to light making it visually more skilled. The typical colors represented for female gender are warmer colors such as pinks and reds. The second design is a red fading into yellow sun with a white male-gender-sign inside it. Again, the colors are not the stereotypical cool colors associated with males. The last design is for all-genders and has a circle with a total of two stars that are in opposite corners of each other.
Each piece has a simple design with a solid color background, but the blue on the all-gender restroom seems almost out of place. In illustrator, the blue was significantly darker and was had better unity with the other two. The shapes for each piece are outlined in white as well as the symbols to identify the gender is colored white which makes them stand out and obvious to the viewer. There is good shading in the sun and moon, but more work needs to be developed in the stars and possibly the background.
My ideas of switching the colors traditionally used for boys and girls breaks the stereotypes but still makes it clear who the bathroom space is designated for. I did use the the rule of thirds for my pieces because I didn't want everything plain in the center since I believe the viewers eye moving across the entire piece is very important.
I think the designs do have a strong message because it has what people are used to and recognize as well something that might be new, yet inclusive to those who wanted this movement, so that everyone has something to be happy about. The strengthening for the message could have a more complex, but still simple, logo designs that grab the viewers attention more so.
I think the designs were overall successful because I followed the assignment of having male, female and all-gender restroom designs that stray away from stereotypes while still making it clear that the logo is for a bathroom. The balance of all pieces together could be stronger as well as the gender emphasis.

Business Card

My business card style guide and color scheme

In the final business card created, there is gold lettering with my full name, title, contact information, and my website on the front. On the back side of the business card one of my paintings that represents my artistic style is displayed, the painting is titled "Bumblebee Stereotype" and not only does it show my style but it is representative of myself as a person with the meaning and rhetoric behind it.
The work has a touch of professional elegance on the front and is complimented with a loose style of artwork on the back. The colors are a good range from black to white and in the painting there is contrast between colors. The depth of the field supports the idea because a business card puts a person out there in order to advertise them in their area of work. As the artist I'm trying to communicate that my work has the potential to be used professionally.
I think the work was overall successful for creating my own business card to advertise my artwork in a professional manner. Changes I could make is using a different color for the font on the front of the business card, I'd like to use one of the purples from my color scheme I created, and I will change that when I figure out how. I used Vista Print to help figure out a layout I find visually pleasing.

Inside/Out Poster

(Left & middle image)
Brainstorming for final InsideOut poster.
(Right Image)
There is a white silhouette of a hand holding a rose, a purplish blue silk fabric is the background complimenting the elegance from the rose. There is the SDSCPA school logo in the upper left hand corner, the Inside Out title is above the rose and centered with the location followed below the title. By the wrist of the hand the fine details of the admission fee, date, and the hosts' of the upcoming show.
The organization of the work has simple colors that still have value, the contrast of the white silhouette emphasizes the hand holding the rose stand out while still being unified with the poster. With the knowledge of the show having the theme of "Social Justice", the rose acts as a gift of purity and truth that is needed for social justice issues.
Social justice definition is: a concept of fair and just relations between the individual and society. It is measured by explicit and tacit terms for the distribution of wealth, opportunities for personal activity and social privileges. There are many movements that are currently working on achieving social justice for society. My poster is trying to communicate the brutal truths that are being exposed in society have the ability to change which will then create peace in our world.
I think the piece has a strong message because social justice alone is heavy material that is often avoided in conversation. Bringing these ideas up over and over agin will help these issues be resolved.
I think the poster is visually pleasing with the contrast of the fabric background with the white hand and rose silhouette. It advertises the show and has its own meaning behind it. If I were to change anything I would create a style guide for this with an accompanying color scheme.

Inside/Out Progress and Inspiration
A developing collaborative project with Nina Chiodo regarding social justice issues, specifically the "clouded thoughts" that happen during times of social justice or injustice that may lead to the social justice issue of suicide and/or self harm.
There will be hanging clouds made from pillow stuffing, with LED lights in them to have the clouds illuminated. The raindrops are made from paper and connected to strings connected to wire that will be entwined in the clouds. Rain incense will bring the sense of smell, while the clouds are visual.

Self Reflection by Lavynder Dawn Hughes
Self Reflection ?¿
You probably look at your reflection everyday. Some people care what they see in the mirror and others simply don't. What do you see when you look in the mirror? You see yourself reflected back. But what matters more? Your physical appearance or your soul?
Self reflection.
When something happens in one's life, there is potential for self reflection. The event could be moving to a new school, making new friends, living your passion, having the opportunity to express yourself through various arts, experiencing your first breakup.
Self Reflection!
Throughout the day think about what issues are on display and especially the ones that are hidden away. Importance of environmental awareness is here to stay, even if the clouds are a darkening grey... When things in society are going astray begin by seeing if you can improve it, and if not take a moment to pray if you wish.

Self Portrait Project
Reflection (04/09/2018):
In the image I see my self portrait cut into four different sized pieces, one stacked on top of the other, with equal amount of space between them. The photo is half-toned with a smokey overlay. Some color that is on me (i.e. my brown hair, skin, and purple jacket) from the original photo is showing through. My first and middle name are in the bottom, repeated twice and each in a different font, one may be difficult to read for some viewers, so there is an easier font to read for that reason.
My name is Lavynder, and so for this self promotional piece, I decided to use a light purple background. In the uploading process, this color has become slightly more dull. I used two black stars with 50% opacity so there wouldn't be too large of a contrast. In the top part of my piece, right above where my head is, I added a star-like light source, and a letter from my name in a decorative font that looks like a crown (the thing right above my head) in order to add some fun and draw the viewers eye to the top. In the middle of this piece I have two thought bubbles that say "thoughtful" in them. One is flipped because I thought this would make the viewer become thoughtful about my decision here. The three words I used to describe me have a very light opacity. I had difficultly making them darker; I borrowed them from a cool website I found. The font for the words "Intuitive, inquisitive, and poetic" have an intricate design inside the lines creating each letter, it is easier to see when zoomed in. At the bottom of the piece, I have my name written twice, the first font is flowery and intricate, spreading across the entire width. The flowery design on each letter almost takes away from the letter itself, making it difficult to read for some. Immediately below this, my name is written again in a font that looks quickly hand written, this is so people know for sure what my name is. Each time my name is written, every letter is in all caps in order to present this as important; the fonts for the name are the largest and darkest too.
The artist (myself) is trying to communicate self promotion. I have my name written twice, a self portrait, and three words to describe who I am as a person as well as describing my senior exhibition theme that will soon be presented. The message here isn't very deep, but is still strong since it is clear. To make the message stronger, my three self-describing words could be darker, but not by too much so the focus is not taken away entirely from the other elements of my piece.
Overall, I do think this piece is successful and will work. Changes I would make is having the purple background be brighter instead of dull. The flowery font for my name written the first time would be a better, more elegant flowery font, yet still edgy. The hand written font makes this work because it is legible for all viewers who can read English.

Final Final (3.0)
|
Here are my three attempts at the magazine cover for the 40th anniversary of SCPA. I see the school's new logo as of this year, and a title I created under this. The background is one of the new colors of the school, blue, and it is a gradient. The design is a purple lotus flower with green, yellow, purple, blue, and orange shading so that all the new s2017-18 school colors are used. A lotus flower is representative of self discovery, and with our new slogan of "live your passion" we are on a journey of self-discovery of who we are as a person and what we are passionate about.
The organization of the work is vertical and centered. There is a balance of lights and shadows in the lotus flower, there is not a large range in the colors used because the requirement was to keep the basic school colors. I think the message will be clear, not to all, but those who are educated to know the symbolism of a lotus flower, and seeing the flower and the school logo together the viewer may understand the meaning behind it.
Through this magazine cover design I am trying to communicate that every student here is an individual on their own individual, spiritual life path. We are all at different places and points in our life and thus will self-discover in many different ways.
I think my work could have been better. I would like to develop the skill of drawing a realistic flower on illustrator and figure out how to do light and shading, and working with colors and brushes in general. I also think a different font that matches the free flowing vibe of the flower would have had a better visual appeal. Then I would also add realistic leaves to the lotus flower.

Homeless Youth Awareness Zine
Written Reflection
In the zine I see a flow of photos of young children to young adults that are homeless on the city streets and the statistics of it. Some you can see their few belongings, while others just have themselves. The passion of life is shown through their activities, such as music, dance, swinging, skateboarding. Daily life still happens for everyone, even f you do not have a home to return to at the end of the day. The praying shows hopefulness in these troubled times, and the sleeping child represents peace and innocence.
The work is organized in a way that shows an individual story on each page, but they are all connected. The stories all have a similar experience of being youth, homeless, passionate, and hopeful. Behind this, the statistics, question marks, and short sentences are there to proclaim the existence of homeless youth and show that there are numerous different reasons why somebody may be out on the streets.
I think that this has a good message because it shows the hopefulness of people that are expected to have no hope, and thus spark some compassion and sympathy of the viewers in order to start a change to decrease the amount of our local homeless population.
To make this even better, I could have taken my own pictures of homeless youth and camp spots next to Petco Park to show just how neglected the homeless are. If i did this, the contrast of black and white colors may have been more clear.
